Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for installing sub-soil drainage
   • Access, interpret and apply sub-soil drainage installation documentation and ensure the work activity is complaint
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear correct personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Identify, obtain, confirm and implement signage requirements
   • Select and check for faults all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
   • Plan stock-piling of materials for ease of access and hazard reduction
2. Set out and excavate trenches
   • Check trench depths and grades to ensure conformity with plans and specifications
   • Set out and clearly mark trench location
   • Communicate with plant operator to ensure correct excavation of trenches, placement of shoring and battering
3. Install bedding materials
   • Identify bedding material type and depth from plans and specifications
   • Lay bedding materials to specified depths and grades
4. Install sub-soil drainage
   • Place geo-textile according to specifications
   • Prepare drain sections and fittings
   • Lay subsoil drain
   • Provide inspection opening and flush out points according to plans
   • Fit out and/or connect end structures/outlets/clean outs to culverts, storm water or subsoil drain systems
   • Install packing and prepare system for backfilling
   • Monitor backfill procedure to ensure work completed to specification
5. Clean up
   • Clear work area and recycle or dispose of materials
   • Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of sub-soil drainage installation including:

accessing, interpreting and applying relevant documentation to the installing sub-soil drainage work activity including relevant drawings and job specifications

identifying, addressing and reporting potential hazards and risks

identifying, obtaining, confirming and implementing signage requirements

selecting and checking for faults all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks

identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues and ground conditions

planning stock-piling of materials for ease of access and hazard reduction

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the installation of sub-soil drainage in a way that meets all of the required outcomes including:

preparing for and organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

using a range of communication techniques and aids to advise others of work activity and exclusion zones

monitoring hazards and identifying and communicating changes to the work environment during the work process

demonstrates completion of installing sub-soil drainage that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

setting out and excavating trenches to the correct location, depth and grade

installing sub-soil drainage using specified materials and meeting backfill requirements

clearing work area and recycling or disposing of materials

cleaning, checking, maintaining and storing plant, tools and equipment

installation of a minimum of one hundred (100) metres of sub-soil drain in two (2) separate locations, including end structures or outlets to design specifications

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in installing sub-soil drainage through:

accessing, interpreting and applying, organisation and site requirements and procedures for:

identifying and managing risks

setting up the work activity

utilising signage for creating an exclusion zone

environmental protection

work health and safety

managing waste

selection of appropriate plant, tools and materials

carrying out work to plans and specifications

applying effective installation of sub-soil drainage techniques
